Maui Photo Festival Pre-conference

by Peter Liu on August 23, 2010

Maui Photo Festival logoIn case you haven’t heard, I’m presenting “Social Media for Photographers” as a pre-conference workshop at the Maui Photo Festival this Wednesday, August 25, 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Maui.

This is a special version of our “Social Media 101″ workshop tailored specifically for photographers. It happens to be something I’m intimately acquainted with.

For those who don’t know, I left a 25-year career in the computer industry and pursued my passion for photography as a professional while I was looking for the next thing to come along. After moving to Maui, I found myself on a rock in the middle of the Pacific Ocean needing to market my photography, so I fell back on my knowledge of technology and used (what became known as) social media to promote my work. That led to the social media consulting practice I have now. Funny where life takes you sometimes.

Hope to see you at the conference. Who’s going to be there?

Back To The 50′s Highway Fountain

Back To The 50's Highway Fountain

Few things are more evocative of fun and nostalgia in American culture than a 1950′s theme. Combine that with some great food and a roadside diner, and you have the Back To The 50′s Highway Fountain in Laupahoehoe on the Big Island of Hawai’i. As you walk in, you’re immediately surrounded by 50′s memorabilia everywhere [...]

Kona Diving Day 4 – Last Day

Undulated Moray Eel (Gymnothorax undulatus), Manta Ray Bay, Kona, Hawaii

All good things come to an end, and today was our last day of diving with Dive Makai Charters for this trip. And what a day it was! We had a crowd of veteran divers on the boat today, so Allison and Tanner pulled out all the stops. Our first site was Pipe Dreams, one [...]

Kona Diving Day 3 – Adventure Day

Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), Au'au Canyon, Big Island, Hawaii

For those who aren’t aware, Dive Makai Charters does an Adventure Day from time to time, when they go several miles offshore and head southwest toward the the area of the 1950 and 1926 lava flows, about 30 miles south of Kailua-Kona. It’s usually a three-tank dive day, and if we have the opportunity to [...]

Kona Diving Day 2

Longfin Anthias (Pseudanthias hawaiiensis), Garden Eel Cove, Kona, Hawaii

I knew something was wrong right away when we pulled into the Honokohau Harbor parking lot and didn’t see the familiar Dive Makai truck with the Lio Kai III in tow on its trailer, with the van next to it. Not long after we parked, we saw the truck pull in with Tanner at the [...]

Diving In Kona Once Again

Blackside Hawkfish (Paracirrhites forsteri), Big Arch, Kona, Hawaii

This is the first day of diving on the first real vacation we’ve had in ages (I actually had to search this blog to find out how long it’s been). The last time we were scuba diving in Kona was two years ago. Before we moved from California, we used to visit Kona every year [...]

Fire In West Maui Mountains

Fire in the West Maui Mountains

As I write this, there’s a fire raging in the West Maui Mountains in Ma’alaea, causing a closure of Honoapiilani Highway and the evacuation of workers at the Kaheawa Wind Farm. From our point of view at the beach near our house in Kihei, it looks pretty massive. I saw it at the foot of [...]

Maui Tweetups Are Growing

I’m happy to see how our Maui tweetups have grown and evolved in the last year or so. It used to be just a small group of us meeting at a coffee place or somewhere to catch up on each other IRL (In Real Life). It turned a corner when we did the tweetup at [...]

Zinfandel Grand Tasting

One of the things we miss about living in Northern California is the ability to just get in the car and drive to the Sonoma or Napa wine country. In fact, we used to stay at the Honor Mansion in Healdsburg and participate in the Winter Wineland events every year. So it’s no surprise we [...]
